E-stimulation
What is E-stimulation?
E-stimulation therapy sends electrical pulses to mimic the action of signals coming from cells in your nervous system that alert you to pain. These mild electrical currents target either muscles or nerves and can help reduce pain by blocking pain receptors.
A TENs unit (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators) is a device that transmits high-frequency pulse ranges, typically from 80 to 120 cycles per second to help reduce or manage acute pain. Low-frequency pulse ranges from 1-20 cycles per second are often used to treat chronic pain.
How does it work?
During your chiropractic treatment, Small electrodes are strategically placed on your skin where you are having the most pain. The small pads will send electrical pulses to areas that have inflammation and muscle spasms. E-stimulation therapy for pain and muscle recovery works similarly to flexing your calf muscle. When you flex a muscle, this is a form of muscle contraction. By repeating that contraction, your blood flow improves, inflammation diminishes, and you help repair your muscle injury by strengthening and training your body’s muscles. The intensity of the electrodes is controlled by how low or high you want the intensity. The chiropractic assistant or therapist will adjust to your comfort level.
