WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a movement system which enhances the flexibility, posture, strength, and mind/body awareness while focusing on the body’s core. Pilates places a strong focus on the core, or abdominal muscles as being a support system for the entire body. Several key principles differentiate Pilates from other forms of exercise such as concentration, centering, control, breath, precision, and flow. These principles are incorporated in methods such as Peak Pilates and BASI Pilates. Pilates can be performed on a mat, using only gravity and the body’s weight as resistance, or can be performed on several types of apparatuses which provide weight resistance. Pilates, whether performed in a class or one-on-one setting, caters to each individual and their body type, based on factors such as one’s age, injuries (if any), gender, and overall health. The benefits of Pilates are endless.
